Member of the Month!
We are so very proud & excited to announce that our Member of the Month goes to Jo!
Jo has been with us for 6 months & forms part of our early morning 6am crew. As we reflect on Jo's time with us its evident how much work she has put in both in & outside of the box. We don't see what goes on "behind the scenes" but what we can see & admire is the progress she has made at the box & this month has been no exception.
We have to congratulate Jo on her three incredible PBs last week:
Well done Jo, we are so happy for you & wish you all the best for the rest of 2017!
Getting to know fellow member Jo....
When did you join Lifting Room CrossFit?
I joined in November 2016. To be honest, my track record with gyms wasn’t that great, so I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it or indeed keep at it. I started off with a 10 class pass, and found myself renewing it just before Christmas! I can easily say that this is my longest and most sustained gym membership ever!
What brought you to the Lifting Room?
Two reasons really; Keri Worrall and I have been friends for years now and she’s always trying to get me more active. There are only so many times that you can say ‘no’ to her, and she was really persistent about me coming along to the Lifting Room, as she felt I’d really enjoy it. It’s not often I say this, but Keri, you were right! The second reason was because I was about to embark on a total lifestyle transformation in the form of weight loss surgery. Having been big for all of my life, and having done (and failed) every diet under the sun, I felt I needed to finally take control and do something to enable a fitter and healthier lifestyle for myself. I needed to prepare myself before the surgery by introducing exercise and since my surgery (mid-January), I’ve been working hard to help my weight loss and tone up. To date, Lifting Room has helped me to lose nearly 6 stones, and I’m excited to continue my journey and see where it takes me!
What has been your most memorable moment?
Now and again you manage an incredible session and my most memorable one has been quite recent; I managed to run (which, to a lot of people is relatively straight forward, but carrying the weight I was, this wasn’t something I could do), do a wall climb and manage some pretty epic squats- all in one session!
What's been your biggest challenge?
Apart from getting up at the crack of dawn to get to the 6am session (zzzzz), I would say my co-ordination in lifting! I really struggle to think and do at the same time! It’s getting better though.
What’s the best part about working out as part of a CrossFit community?
The support. Not just from Sophie, but from the other members. I really feel like part of a team during the sessions and having Sophie recognise if I’m struggling is really important- doing some scaled movements has really helped. I have done other classes where the whole class is expected to complete the same exercises - Sophie tailors it to individuals.
If you could describe the Lifting Room in three words, what would they be?
Supportive. Varied. Fun!
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Do you play another sport or are you part of another club?
I’m lucky to have a very busy and varied social life, so most evenings are taken up by something. I play darts 3 nights a week for Northamptonshire, and I enjoy gigs/concerts and theatre trips.
What's your goal for the rest of 2017?
I think the rest of the year will mostly be spent doing much of the same! I would just like to make steady improvements and do less scaled movements as time goes on. Maybe a Wolf Run (or similar) might be on the cards in the not so distant future….
